LEADING U.K. BARRISTER
Gilbert Beyfus Dead At 75
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON. October 31. Mr Gilbert Beyfus. Q.C.. one of the most distinguished and highly-paid members of the English Bar, died at his home yesterday, aged 75. Mr Beyfus, who retired last May for health reasons, was called to the Bar in 1908 and became a senior counsel in 1933. He was in continuous practice for 52 years and was engaged in many notable cases, particularly in the fields of divorce, libel and slander. The “Daily Mail” said that when he appeared for the American pianist, Liberace, who sued a British newspaper last year, it was estimated that he received a £lOOO fee plus a £250 sterling daily refresher in the eight-day case. Liberace was awarded £BOOO damages. The Judge called Mr Beyfus “one of the outstanding advocates of our time.” The newspaper said Mr Beyfus made Legal history in another case by speaking six hours a day for nearly six days. He was known as the “Old Fox.”
