PROGRESS AT NEW HIGH SCHOOL
Concern Expressed By Headmaster A telegram expressing concern at the “reported lack of progress” on the classroom block at the new Hillmarten High School, sent from Auckland by the headmaster, Mr C. Lewis, was received by the Christchurch Post-primary Schools’ Council last evening. The position was not as serious as the telegram might indicate, although it was true that the rate of progress on the block was “not so impressive” at the moment, said the secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan). % The ‘Ministry of Works had given an assurance, however, that the block would be ready by February, Mr Halligan said. “We have been particularly happy so far in regard to both Mairehau and Hillmorten High Schools,” said the chairman (Mr W. J. Cartwright). In some aspects, the contractors were ahead of schedule St both schools. “In the August vacation, Mr Lewis was so impressed with the progress, he took back photographs of the school to show his contemporaries in Auckland,” said Mr Halligan. “I think it is true, though, that the rate of progress is not so impressive at the moment, but the Ministry of Works is aware of the position, and they have assured me the classrooms will be ready in February.” It was decided to reply to Mr Lewis’s telegram to this effect.
