German Firm

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) FRANKFURT, Oct. 21. A British and an American firm are to co-operate with West Germany in producing uranium 235 cheaply by the centrifuge method. The chairman of the Frankfurt firm. Degussa, which has developed the process. Dr. Felix Alexander Prementzel, told a press conference that the development had reached the stage where it had to be put on broader shoulders.

He said the West Germa i Atomics Ministry had approved continuation of the work in cooperation with the British and American firm's, which he did not identify. The West German Government recently classified further development of the centrifuge as a State secret. A Government spokesman said this was to prevent the method from falling into the hands of hostile countries, which might adapt it to produce atomic weapons.
