78 PERSONS FINED £6 10s EACH
Sequel To Raid On Gaining House (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 18. Seventy-eight persons who crammed a small courtroom at the Magistrate’s Court in Auckland today were fined a total of £6 10s each in fines and costs when they pleaded guilty to being found in a common gaming house and being on premises where liquor was being sold illegally. The charges were an outcome of a police raid last Saturday night on a house in New North road. Some of the accused and the Hokianga Sports Club face other charges in connexion with the use of the premises and the hearing of these and charges against four accused who failed to appear today were adjourned until October 27. . The police prosecutor (Mr G. A. Dallow) said the police found standing room only in the house. Liquor was being sold from a bar—beer at 3s a bottle—and crown and anchor was being played. A total of 796 bottles were found, 244 of them full, and over £5l was seized from the crown and anchor table.
