ADDINGTON MARKET Fat Hogget, Sheep Values Firm; Heavy Cattle Ease
Fat hoggets showed a marked advance in values at Addington Market yesterday and a similar improvement was apparent in the fat sheep section, although to a lesser degree. Smaller numbers in both sections over the last few weeks have resulted in increased competition. Spring lambs were about the same. Fat cattle increased in number and the preponderance of heavyweight steers resulted in this class easing by 40s to 50s a head. Choice steers and heifers weakened about 20s, but cows, which were scarce, held late rates and in places improved. Store sheep again met a strong, sound sale and, although numbers in the section were smaller, quality was generally good. Store cattle also sold soundly. The sale next week will be held on Wednesday, October 26, because of Labour Day week-end, and the following week a double sale will be held on Tuesday, November 1, as there will be no sale during Carnival week which follows.
STORE SHEEP Store sheep again met a sound Bale, reflecting the present feed position, and although the entry was smaller quality was, in the main, good. The gallery following the sale was fairly large, and offered good competition on most lines. The offering totalled 2031, compared with 3587 last week, and included 695 hoggets. 854 ewes and lambs, and 482 wethers. The hoggets were nearly all shorn and predominantly fine-wools. Sales were made briskly, and values looked to be fully up to last week’s good rates. Best fine-wool wether hoggets sold from 52s 6d to 58s, with average at 47s to 495. An unidentified vendor sold 100 halfbred wether hoggets at 58s, and the same price was paid for 25 Corriedales from R. McKenzie iHalswell). Fifty-five mixed sex' halfbreds made 56s for E. T. Smith (Prebbleton). Corriedale ewe hoggets sold up to 65s carrying a moderate pelt, and two other fine-wool sales were made at 55s and 565. The top price of 65s for Corriedale ewe hoggets was gained by a Mid-Canterbury vendor, who sold 91 at that figure, and J. L. Reese (Southbridge) sold 47 Corriedales at 565. Sales included:— National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd., and H. Matson and Company sold: on account of J. L. Reese (Southbridge), 47 Corriedale ewe hoggets at 565; R. Lewis Rangiora) sold 65 Comedale ewes and 97 Southdown cross lambs at 37s 6d to 42s all counted, and B. C. Wilson (Rangiora) sold 29 ewes of similar breeding with 31 Southdown cross lambs at 41s. SPRING LAMBS ,_Jhe sprin £ lamb entry totalled 580 head, compared with 261 last week and 389 the week before. Quality was again good although a fair proportion of the lambs were on the plain side. Values held remarkably well to late rates, but some of the smaller sorts showed a fractional weakening, reflecting the increased supply. Best lambs made from 67s Id to 74s Id, with odd sales up to 78s Id, and good made from 56s Id to 65s Id with average at 48s Id to 54s Top sales at 78s Id were made by the estate E. FAT HOGGETS Good fat hoggets were scarce and the total entry was again only of moderate proportions with 1122 head being offered, compared with 1138 Values generally showed a marked advance of 5s to 6s a head on the best prime pens, with some as much as 8s to 10s dearer. Medium weights were dearer by 4s to 5s a
head, and the lighter and plainer sorts also showed a definite firming. Competition was keen throughout and the improved level was maintained until the end. The market was topped for woolly hoggets by Miss Heather McKay (Halkett) with one at 97s Id, and Master I. J. Middleton (Springston) sold two at 96s Id. The sales of shorn hoggets were headed by F. Jamison (Aylesbury) with 21 at 95s Id, and a second pen at 93s Id. Among other good sales around the top mark was 90s Id. which was gained by M. G. Thome (Oxford) for 13. FAT SHEEP The fat sheep entry was again of moderate size, and the total offering of 2819 head was only a slight gain on the previous week’s tally of 2384. Top quality wethers were generally scarce, and this was reflected in the limited number of high prices. The short hogget yarding also played its part in stimulating competition, and the prime medium-weight wethers showed a gain of Is to 2s a head on last week’s sharply improved rates. All other classes of wether sold fully firm to a shade better on late rates, although the firming tendency for other than medium-weights was not marked. Young ewes again sold soundly, reflecting the short-; age of good wethers and hoggets. Butchers’ ewes met an improved sale both in competition and prices, and most classes could be quoted fully 2s to 3s above last week’s improved rates. Quality was again variable. While woolly wether sales were recorded up to £5 Is Id for sheep from R. Shanks (Dorie), three shorn wethers from Brown Bros. (Kaituna) were sold at 93s Id, and sales at 90s Id were made by G. J. Francis (Halswell), A. V. Reid and Son (Irwell) and T. D. Allen (Waikari). C. O. Redfern (Darfield) sold woolly ewes to 69s Id, and among good sales of shorn butchers’ ewes were those of D. A. Carter (Brookside) at 39s Id. and C. T. A. Ward and Sons (Chertsey) and O. R. Chamberlain (Ellesmere), both at 37s Id.

FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry totalled 439 head, compared with 359 last week, but quality throughout was generally just as good as the last two sales. There was a big proportion of heavyweight steers, however, which were in excess of demand and this class of cattle was cheaper by £2 to £2 10s a head.
On the very choice medium weight steers and prime heifers- values were lower by about £1 but there was still a sound demand at this level and sustained competition. Cows were scarce and values held to about the same level with a slight firming tendency noticeable in parts of the
.estate R. o. Bradley I?£ art # ns - had an outstanding ? aIe rt of eight steers at £56 17s 6d to £63 2s 6d, and H. G. Dalglish sold one steer at £6O 7s 6d. BULLS About a dozen bulls were offered, compared with six last week, and values were about the same. The top price was £49 7s 6d, with most of the other sales ranging from £25 to £35, and an odd price down to £l5. All the bulls were in the light to medium-weight category, but the entry included two or three useful service types. DAIRY CATTLE Only about 20 head of dairy cattle were offered and these were mainly cows of average to good quality. .Demand, except in isolated cases, was fairly dull and values held to about the same level as last week. Best second, third and fourth calvers sold from £33 to £4O, with others selling down to £24. For the few heifers sold values ranged from £3l to £4O for the best with others making down to £26. VEALERS The vealer yarding was barely half of that of last week with only 50 to 60 head being offered. Quality again showed a marked variation and the entry showed the same proportion of top quality veal—four or five pens. Small calves, which were not plentiful, showed a marked appreciation of about 20s a head, but the balance of the offering sold generally to about the same rates Best large runners sold up to £35 9s, with medium at £2B 3s 6d to £3l 8s 6d, and small at £25 3s 6d to £27 18s 6d; best suckers made £23 12s 6d to £25 13s 6d, medium £2O 4s 6d to £23 8s 6d, and small at £l6 18s 6d to £l9 18s 6d; large calves sold at £l6 12s 6d to £lB 18s 6d. with medium at £l2 2s 6d to £l5 7s 6d, small at £6 2s 6d to £lO 3s 6d, and bobbies from 53s to £4 15s. FAT PIGS The porker entry was slightly smaller and again consisted of heavy types. Quality, however, showed a marked improvement. The sale opened on an easier note, and this trend was maintained for all except the very best light-weight types which met spirited competition. The baconer entry was a little larger and values were a shade better for the best quality. Overfat pigs, however, were hard to quit. In the chopper section more pigs were offered, but good quality types again met an excellent sale. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers, £7 9s 6d to £8 9s 6d. From the beginning values were easier by 3s to 5s a head, and this level was maintained throughout. Large stores again commanded good competition and an entry of two sows with litters made from £27 to £34. Values were:— Weaners, 75s to £5 ss. Slips, £5 10s to £5 15s. Medium and small stores. £6 5s to £7. Large stores, £7 4s to £7 16s.
