Benaud To Play

The captain of the Australian test team, Richie Benaud. said on his return from South Africa that he was confident his career in big cricket would not be seriously affected by his broken spinning finger. He hopes to be fit to play again in three weeks.

Three weeks ago, in the middle of a tour with a British Commonwealth side, Benaud injured his spinning finger when he attempted a catch off his own bowling. He took a chip off the base of the second joint of the finger and split the bone down to the third joint.

Benaud said that he had been told there might be a slight ridge remaining on the finger. “Maybe that will help me to spin the ball a little more,” he said.
