MEAT EXPORTS TO CANADA
Direct Supply From N.Z. Advocated “I am convinced that there is an opportunity in Newfoundland. Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick for direct import of New Zealand meats and other goods,” says the New Zealand Government trade commissioner, Montreal (Mr N. S. Mountain). The commissioner recently made a trade survey of this area, according to a report on the Canadian maritime provinces in “Export News." the official newsletter of the Department of Industries and Commerce.
“Both in New Brunswick and Newfoundland particular interest was shown in the prospect of securing continuity of supplies of lamb and mutton from New Zealand at prices competitive with other meats,” says Mr Mountain. “Domestic production in these provinces is negligible and current demand is filled by seasonal supplies of fresh lamb from Ontario or Quebec, supplemented by imports of frozen supplies through Toronto and Montreal.
“Although beef production in the Maritime provinces is higher than that of lamb, there is still need, particularly in Newfoundland. to supplement local supplies. Frozen carcase, beef and manufacturing beef are both in demand.”
