FIGHTING IN KATANGA

40 Tribesmen Killed (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LUSAKA (Nothern Rhodesia), October 17. Forty Africans were killed in a full-scale battle between Baluba and Bwila tribesmen in northerly Katanga last week, it was learned at Lusaka today. A letter from a missionary doctor in the battle area, on the Katanga-Rhodesian border, said the Bwilas won. A number of Northern Rhodesia tribesmen had answered a Bwila appeal for help against a threatened counter-attack.

The letter, received by the district officer in charge of Chilenge. on the Rhodesian side of the frontier, said the battle was on Wednesday. Two mobile units of the Northern Rhodesia police have been moved in to stand by at Chilenge and Kawambwa.
