Auckland
Sir, —“Caractacus” says: “To the sophisticated observer Christchurch has a mellow dignity which Auckland lacks.” As a traveller seeing much of all main centres, I say that Christchurch has the dignity of a bygone era, which a large modern progressive city like Auckland would be ashamed to retain. As far as a metropolis is concerned, Auckland is one of the larger western cities in the Commonwealth, and in comparison with this city’s status is certainly approaching a metropolis. Persistent South Island jealousy only admits these facts. With such a rich hinterland, superior climate, markets and position, Auckland will continue to capture an ever greater proportion of the nation’s wealth while Christchurch and the like “sophisticate.” Go north, young man, if you have the initiative to take advantage of the best opportunities in New Zealand.— Yours, etc., W L C. SAUNDERS. October 17, 1960.
