“Breeches Bible”

Sir, —I should like to assure Mr Joyce that his gift is being properly looked after. With other rarities it is in my office, to be displayed under glass from time to time. It is true that the Geneva Bible of which this is a copy was originally published in 1560 (new testament 1557) and except for the first editions, copies of it are not as rare as the news item suggested. As Sir Frederic Kenyon remarks, it "became the Bible of the household . . . and up to 1617 there was hardly a year which did not see one or more reprints of it.” The Joyce family copy was printed by Robert Barker in 1607, while the metrical version of the Psalms, bound in with it, is dated 1609.—Yours, etc., R. N. O’REILLY. City Librarian. October 18, 1960.
