UNIVERSITY TRUST BILL

Hawke’s Bay Scheme (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. October 18. Members of both parties supported the University of Hawke’s Bay Trust Bill when it was given a second reading in the House of Reoresentatives today. The object of the bill, sponsored by Mr J. G. Edwards (Government. Napier), is to incorporate the University of Hawke’s Bay Trust Board, which will administer the Hawke’s Bay centennial memorial trust fund set up to assist in the esablishment of a university in the province. Mr Edwards, who described the site as on the main road midway between Napier and Hastings, said the Centennial Council had received assurances from the Minister of Education, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Cabinet that, subject to approval by the University Grants Committee, there would be a university established in 15 or 20 years. The Minister of Forests (Sir Eruera Tirikatene) said the gift of 50 acres for the university site by Mrs Hilda Hetley, of Taradale, was a wonderful gesture, and the Prime Minister (Mr Nash) said that the Government had agreed to remit estate duty on the property.
