The successful applicant will be expected to carry out research of his own choosing in some field associated with automatic computation, to assist in courses run by the Department (including courses which form part of the University of Sydney post-graduate Diploma in Numerical Analysis and Automatic Computing), to supervise research students, to advise in the use of the department’s computer SILLIAC, both as regards programming and numerical techniques, and to assist in the running of the dept. Qualifications required are at least an Honours Degree in Pure and Applied Mathematics,, Mathematical Statistics, Physics or Engineering, with suitable post-gradu-ate research experience, and some knowledge of numerical methods. Previous experience with automatic computers, although desirable, is not essential. Salary, depending on qualifications and experience, will be within the range for a Lecturer (£1730 x 105—£2435 per annum) or for a Senior Lecturer (£2550 x 95—£3000 per annum) or will be that for a Reader (£3300 per annum). In each case cost of living adjustments (at present £l3 p.a.) will be paid and the salary will b*e subject to deductions under the State Superannuation Act. It is desirable, but not essential, that the successful applicant should be able to take up his appointment not later than March. 1961.
