MAORI CARVINGS FOR HAWAII

Department's Views On Mormon Move (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. Opt. 13. “We have taken cognisance of the protest made against the export of carvings from the Kahungunu Meetinghouse at Nuhaka," aaid the acting-secret tary of the Department of Maori Affairs (Mr J. K. Hunn) today. He was replying to an inquiry whether the export of the carvings to Hawaii, approved by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Anderton) would proceed in the fg«e of opposition by Nuhaka Maoris of non-Mormon faith to the move arranged by the Mormon Church. Mr Hunn said that so far as he knew, there was no obstacle to the export of the carvings. He did not know whether the meetinghouse contained a roll of honour for men from both world wars. “I am hopeful negotiations will take place between the Mormon Church and the Maori leaders of the district so. that the present difference can be settled amicably,” said Mr Hunn.
