There are very many jokes about old age. Even men celebrating their fiftieth birthdays have to bear with the humorists who insist on helping them into their office chairs. Sometimes age can be a jest even to those who are old; but far too often it is a period of lonely despair. Illness and neglect among small children wrenches the hearts of the most unsentimental, but there is not so much awareness of the problems presented by those at the other end of the road—the aged people who either through years of infirmity, or both, are not capable of looking after themselves, . or of finding much enjoyment in a world that has passed them by. So today, when the Aged People’s Welfare Council begins a drive for membership, it should meet with a warm and ready response. The council does wonder-
