HYPERION RETIRED

(tv.Z. Press Association— CopyngntJ

LONDON, Oct. 13. Hyperion, the most lovable racehorse of his era and the century’s most outstanding sire of winners, has at last called it a day. At the age of 30 —the equivalent of 90 human years—the “grandest old man” of racing has gone into retirement. He will sire no more foals, according to the ‘.‘Daily Mirror.” Hyperion is a Derby and St. Leger winner. His success at the stud has been phenomenal. Until the beginning of this season his offspring had won 742 British races, worth £549,865. In 12 other countries they had won a further 200 races worth many thousands more. To trace the success of his grandchildren and great-grand-children would be a never-end-ing quest. Now he will sire no more foals, although they could still fetch COOOgns at public auction. His last two foals were born in January. Hyperion won the Derby in 1933. He last raced at Newmarket in 1934. Alcove’s Narrow Win In Cesarewitch (M.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 12. Lord Derby’s Alcove, starting 100 to 30 favourite, won the Cesarewitch Stakes, run over two and a quarter miles at Newmarket, Suffolk, this afternoon, after a photo finish with Mrs M. Lycett Green’s 100 to 8 chance. Sea Wolf. The favourite got the verdict by a neck to give the jockey, Douglas Smith, his fifth win in this race since the war. Alcove, a classically bred filly by the Gold Cup Winner Alycidon, was the third of her sex to win since the war. The northern horse. Sea Wolf, came with a storming run at the finish but could not catch the favourite. Mrs C. A. Spencer’s Hoy took third place from the Duke of Norfolk’s Radiation. Hoy started at 100 to 7 in a field of 20 runners.
