EXPEDITIONS TO HIMALAYAS
Five Nations To Send Teams (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 10 p m.) LONDON, October 12 Britain, France. the United States. Japan and India have been authorised to send expeditions next year into the Nepal Himalayas. says the Katmandu correspondent of “The Times.” The British expedition will tackle the uncliimbed Nuptse peak in the Everest group, which is described as a ridge rather than a mountain. Its sharp and jagged crest runs for over two miles at a constant elevation of 25,000 feet. The American expedition, the first from that country, has been permitted to attempt Everest next spring. The French climber* will once again come to grips with an old but magnificent adversary, the unconquered 25.400 feet high Jannu peak in east Nepal. Jannu is considered one of the most difficult Himalayan peaks to climb and portions are said to be well-nigh impossible. The Japanese will send an expedition to attempt the Langtang Lirung range north of Katmandu.
The Indians have staked their claim to the 23.190 ft Pumori peak near the Everest group, from which Eric Shipton nine years, ago first saw the possibility of climbing Everest from the southern or Nepalese tide.
