CHRISTCHURCH CRIME

10,000 Charges Heard So Far This Year With still two months and ahalf left to the end of the year, 1960 seems destined to become Christchurch’s worst year for crime. In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday the 10,000 th criminal charge to be laid this year was heard. This is nearly 1000 charges more than had been laid against offenders at this time last year. With more than 1000 charges being laid every month, the record of 12.030 charges for the whole of 1959 seems almost certain to be exceeded this year. Ten years ago the number of criminal charges through the courts was only 7003, and in 1955 the figure was 9945 charges. The 10,000 th criminal charge before the Court yesterday was one of unlawful conversion of a motor vehicle, an offence which police said recently had nearly doubled in the city in recent months.
