UNUSUAL USE FOR KITE
Power Line Flown Across River (New Zealand Press Association) WESTPORT. October 13. A kite had been used as a pilot when several power extension lines had been “flown” across the Buller river recently. Mr I. A. Dobson, engineer to the Buller Power Board, told the monthly meeting of the board on Wednesday. He said wires to Mr J. D. O’Connor’s property in the Loopline area had been installed to complete the low tension extension from Te Kuha.to Loopline at the foot of the Buller Gorge. A fishing line had been attached to an ordinary paper kite. When the kite was judged to be sufficiently high, a stronger rope line had been attached and the extra weight had brought the kite down opposite bank of the river. The power lines, which had been attached to the rope, had then been hauled over the river, the entire process taking an hour. Mr Dobson considered that providing winds were favourable the process could be used successfully on the Mokihinui-Karamea extension line, where long spans were necessary.
Members complimented the engineer on his initiative and skill as a kite flier.
