TRAINING IN WELFARE
Problem Families Discussed “I know a welfare worker who knows 240 “problem families’ in Christchurch,” said Mr N. A. Collins to the synod of the Diocese of Christchurch last evening. These families tended to gather in the older and decadent parts of the city, he said. “Our suggestion is that a scheme of training in house cleanliness, personal hygiene and home management such as has been run by the London County Council should be run.” Mr Collins, who is chairman of the diocese’s public and social affairs committee, was introducing two motions, both of which were carried. The motions read:— “That synod advise the Minister of Housing (Mr Fox) and the Christchurch City Council of its view that problem families are a responsibility of the whole community.
“That before such families are rehoused under any scheme for their welfare they be given suitable training and assistance in a centre provided by the State in conjunction with the local authority.’ ’
