British Labour Party
Sir,—I cannot agree with, my compatriot, B. L. Turner, that Frank Cousins or anyone else outside the legitimate realm of politics should try to engineer a political measure by means of a block industrial vote. To my mind this is a most dangerous example of the use of power without a corresponding sense of responsibility. The apathy of trade unionists as a whole is
notorious,. and those who have any genuine or intelligent ideas about unilateral disarmament can perfectly well express them in the next election, instead of yielding placidly to the persuasions of left-wing shop stewards., In the event of a showdown with a foreign Power it is not Mr Cousins and his minions Who would be charged with responsibility for ' the national welfare but the country’s elected Government. This is evidently Mr Gaitskell’s conviction and for once I find myself in agreement with him.—Yours, etc., I. TREW. October 12, 1960.
