GOLF Miss N. Campbell Wins Match-Play Title, 5-Up

WELLINGTON, October 12. Miss N. Campbell (Nelson) today won the New Zealand women’s match-play title when she beat Miss B. Cheney (Melbourne), 5 and 4, in the 36-hole final on the last day of the national women’s golf championships at Paraparaumn Beach. One down after the morning’s 18 holes, Miss Campbell dominated the afternoon play with her magnificent drives. Miss Cheney could not match this power game. Even her accurate play about the greens was of no avail, and she was 4 down after nine holes. Miss Campbell first won the title in 1958, when she was 18, by beating Mrs J. Mangan (Manawatu). Last year she was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Mrs P. McDiarmid (Hamilton). Thirteen of this morning’s 18 holes were halved, with Miss Cheney winning the fifth, fourteenth, and sixteenth, and Miss Campbell the seventeenth and eighteenth. Miss Cheney looked the better player this morning. She was more than making up for her inability to match the length of Miss Campbell’s drives by accurate chipping and putting. On two occasions her chip shot hit the pin. Miss Campbell too often misjudged chips and left herself a long putt, but she improved to win the last two holes. Afternoon Play During the afternoon, under a cloudless sky, a gallery of about 400 saw golf of a type all too rarely seen. Miss Campbell’s birdie four won the first hole, and she went to 1 up after the second when Miss Cheney missed a 3ft putt. The game was squared

on the third after Miss Campbell had gone off the fairway a little with her drive. Both holed 9ft putts at the fourth to halve it in birdie fours. During the morning Miss Campbell had lost this hole after Miss Cheney had rolled a long putt to within inches of the hole. Miss Campbell took the 150 yard fifth in a scratch three to Miss Cheney’s four. One up, Miss Campbell took the next three holes in the scratch figures of 4,5, and 4. Her drives were tremendous, and she was accurate with her seconds. Miss Cheney’s second at the 262 yd sixth dropped into a bunker, and though she cleared splendidly she was left a stroke behind. When she had a chance to go farther ahead at the ninth Miss Campbell missed a 3ft putt and the hole was halved in one over scratch.

Miss Cheney’s outward run had taken her 42 strokes, compared with her morning’s run of 38. Miss Campbell was out in a scratch 37—two strokes better than her morning total. Miss Cheney’s tee shot from the

tenth was pulled into a drainage ditch, the ball stopping in almost the exact spot where it cost her a penalty stroke to drop out, during her morning round. She paid another penalty stroke to drop out, and lost the hole with a five to a four.

Miss Campbell was in trouble on the eleventh after she had sliced her shot off the tee. She failed to approach accurately, and was still not .within easy putting distance after four strokes. She conceded the hole to Miss Cheney, who had played straight up, the fairway to be near the hole for two.

The twelfth and thirteenth were halved in scratch fives, and the game ended on the fourteenth green when Miss Cheney failed with a 3ft putt and Miss Campbell holed a 2ft putt.' An interested spectator was Mrs G. W. Hollis (Titirangi), the only New Zealand woman golfer other than Miss Campbell to have been on a plus two handicap. She was formerly Miss Oliver Kay. In the final of the New Zealand Plate, last year’s match champion, Miss U. Wickham (Tauranga) beat Mrs D. Steel (Grange), 1 up. A 17-year-old golfer from Rotorua, Miss J. Butler, beat the former New Zealand representative, Mrs V. S. Land (Wellington), 2 up, for the Waddell Rose Bowl. Mrs R. Fullertc.i-Smith (Marton) beat Mrs R. W. Nowell (Hawera), 6 and 5, in the final of the Waddell Rose Bowl Flight.
