PRESBYTERY CENTENARY
Big Celebration Planned The centenary of the- Presbytery of Christchurch will be commemorated “in a -worthy manner” m 1964. the Presbytery decided yesterday. Th 6 proposal was submitted by the Rev. R. M. Rogers, convener of the Centennial Committee. In accordance with other recommendations by the committee, the Presbytery will instruct its Bills and Business Committee to nominate an enlarged centennial committee. This will inelude representatives of the Bible class movement, the church schools, the Presbyterian Social Service Association, the Order of Deaconesses, the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, the Women’s Presbyterian Fellowship, the ministers of the four foundation parishes—St. Andrew’s. Akaroa, Kaiapoi, and Amuri; and any other members considered necessary. The Presbytery will also invite the Presbyterians of Timam Westland, and Ashburton to appoint corresponding members. Mr Rogers is Minister of St. Andrew’s Church. He said the first meeting of the presbytery—then known as the Presbytery- of Canterbury—was held there on January 26, 1864, after the General Assembly had authorised its establishment in 1863. He said the committee’s consideration of celebrations included suggestions for a historical pageant; a visit from an overseas leader; a historical' record; and a children’s function. The committee also recognised that consideration would have to be given to finance, he said.
