PARTY FOR OLD FOLK

Red Crdss ' Function

A spring party with a gala setting was arranged for more than 50 elderly people in Christchurch yesterday, by members of the North Canterbury Centre of the Red Cross Sbciety.

Members of the Rose Society, sub-centres of the Red Cross, different garden circles and friends of the society all helped to arrange the striking floral display for the party. Large, bowls of spring blossom, arum lilies, irises, scarlet tulips and other flowers were arranged on the stage and round the Lady Wigram Hall. At intervals down the long afternoon, tea tables were posy bowls of perfumed spring blooms. Each male guest received a floral- buttonhole and each Woman received a Victorian posy as a memento of the afternoon.

Sleight of hand tricks were performed by Mr Donald Stringer. A duet in costumes of the “Gay Nineties” was presented by Mesdames P. Hill and Mavis Brown, who were accompanied by Mrs E Storie. Mrs Olive Gee gave a humorous recitation and vocal solos were sung by Mrs L. Haase. For many of the guests the outstanding part of the afternoon’s entertainment was a community sing of numbers of old and favourite tunes. This was led by Mrs R. I. Lamb and was accompanied by Mr Ivor Weir. The spring party is a new venture for the Red Cross which usually gives one at the end of the year. The organisers planned this one for a time which was much appreciated by the guests who often find summer heat difficult to cope with on this type of outing. Some of those present were recipients of the Red Cross meals on wheels and others were those whose names appear on the regular Red Cross visiting list. The hostess yesterday was Mrs R. I. Brake, president of' the North Canterbury Centre. x
