Trentham Pacework By Northern Horses

“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, October 11. Several northern horses were at Trentham this morning, but they were given time to recover from travelling, and were let off with pacework. The trio from the Takanini stable of F. and G. W. Smith, Challen, Chatsmore and Donfair, attracted most interest.

The latter is engaged in the Wellesley Stakes and Challen and Chatsmore will clash in tile Wellington Guineas on the opening day of the Wellington meeting on Saturday. A strong colt, Chatsmore took no harm from his winning effort in the Great Northern Guineas and he will be one of the favourites this week. He can expect strong opposition from the filly Challen, which has done well since she won the Gold Trail Stakes and Hawke’s Bay Guineas recently. She has a wide barrier position to overcome on Saturday, but she is a brilliant beginner. Also a winner at Hastings at his last start, Donfair is not likely to be. troubled by toe extra furlong this week. He appears to have trained on well in the last fortnight Philadelphus and Nuncio were toe only members of G. W. B, Greene’s team on hand this morning. His other candidates. Fountainhead, Drumhirk and Arthur's Sister were due later in the day. , ’ Philadelphus is an impressivelooking three-year-old by Gebador but of the brilliant Pfoeroz Girl. At No. 8 he is well-drawn in the Rimutakn Hack Handicap. His first show of form in three attempts this season was a fourth over six furlongs at Ellerslie on Saturday, when he' was running on.. Nuncio also heralded a return to form at Ellerslie, beating all but Chatsmore in the Great Northern Guineas. Twelve months ago he won the Wellesley Stakes. Marengo will not fulfil his engagements at Trentham and others which wiß not make the trip include Golden Fairy, and Vae Victis. Other visitors let off with pacework were Prince Argon, Dandy Jack. Kilowatt Forewarned, Upercut Lord Pilate, Waterman. Basgned. Null! Secundus. Studio. Airindia, Dipdochi and Feleka. Best Gallop . The best of the little galloping on the trial grass, which was easy

after heavy rain on Monday afternoon, was three furlongs by Gold Symbol (Burton) in 37 3-ssec. A candidate for toe October Hack Handicap, he was third over the distance (one mile) at his last start at Te Aroha. He looks the type to do best over middle distances. The Wellington Guineas candidate Even Stevens (Sellwood) was not asked for his best while running six furlongs in Imin 22 l-ssec, the last four in 54sec and the last three in 40sec. He looks improved with his race in toe Hawke’s Bay Guineas, in which he was beaten narrowly by Challen. Donna Bella (Wylie) worked leisurely over half a mile in 84 4-ssec, coming from the three furlongs in 402-ssec. Blotter (Wylie) completed pacework from toe mile by sprinting from the three furlongs in 38 3-ssec. He should get his chance in two middle distance hack events on toe later days of toe meeting. Royal Leigh (Ackland) showed his customary speed to run half a mile in 52 4-ssec, the last three furlongs taking 39sec. Valaris (Dodds) travelled easily from the mile to the half, and increased the pece to come from’ there in 53 4-ssec. The last three furlongs took 39 l-ssec. He was runner-up to Heythorpe in the Masterton Gold Cup and is not without a chance in the Wellington Handicap. Riflemen is recovering from the injury he sustained when he struck himsetf in training last week, but he will be unable to take his ptace in the Wellington Guineas field.
