PARLIAMENT’S DIARY

When Parliament resumed yesterday afternoon seven questions were asked. Four days’ leave of absence was granted Mr T. P- Paikea (Government, Northern Maori) because of illness. The University of Hawke’s Bay Trust Bill was read a first time, and the following measures a second time:—The Child Welfare Amendment Bill, the Primary Products Marketing Regulations Amendment Bill, the Agriculture (Emergency Regulations Confirmation) Amendment Bill, and the Disabled Persons Employment Promotion Bill. Part of the afternoon and most of the evening debate was on the second reading of the Estate and Gift Duties Amendment Bill. The speakers were:— Government: the Minister of Finance (Mr Nordmeyer), the Minister of Customs (Mr Boord), the Minister of Forests (Sir Eruera Tirikatene), Messrs R. J. Tizard (Tamaki), and M. A. Connelly (Riccarton) . Opposition: Messrs J. T. Watts (Fendalton), J. R. Hanan (Invercargill), T. P. Shand (Marlborough), W. S. Goosman (Piako), R. E. Jack (Patea), and C. G. Harker (Hawke’s Bay). The bill was read a second time.
