LONDON DOCK STRIKE

Meat Shortage Threatening LONDON, October 10. A major hold-up of meat imports from Australia. New Zealand. and other meat-producing countries is threatening a shortage in British shops. A three-week-old strike by 1000 tally clerks at the London docks is holding up unloading and ships are being diverted to European ports to discharge their cargoes. “The position is very serious from the importer's point of view, because we cannot get hold of the meat,” a leading London wholesale spokesman said tonight. “Nine shiploads have been diverted to the Continent in the last 10 days Many more ships are waiting off-shore for decisions on where to unload. Some of the meat is being airfreighted to Britain," he said. Hopes of ending the strike quickly faded today when the striking clerks voted to continue the stoppage. The strike is over recruiting. This afternoon 157 ships were idle and 58 were being worked.
