THIS GRAPH OF SMITHFIELD PRICES for New Zealand lamb (prime Down cross, 291b to 36lb) over the last three yean is adapted from figures supplied by the Meat Board. It is of special interest now because of the imminent opening of the 1966-61 export killinc season. The opening schedule is usually announced at the Hawke’s Bay show, to be held this year on October 18 to 26. The latest Smithfield price shown at the graph (for the week ended September 30) is 25d per lb. This compares with 27½d two years ago, and 18¼d 12 months ago. The 1952-59 opening schedule for 29-36lb lambs in the South Island was 29d per lb, and the 1959-60 opening sehedule was 13d.
