FIRST LAMB DRAFT

When farmers visit Canterbury Agricultural College’s light land farm at Ashley Dene on October 18 they should see the farm’s first draft of fat lambs for the season. The lambs will be the' progeny of Border Leicester Corriedale 'cross ewes and Dorset Down rams. At that date the first draft will be more than a Week behind the first drafts of the last two years. Last year the first draft was taken on October 8 and in the previous year on October 6. According to Professor A. H. Flay, head of the farm management and rural valuation department at Lincoln, the ewes were slightly later lambing this season and colder weather has resulted in the lambs not being quite so far forward. Last season Ashley Dene had drafted 790 lambs as fats by the end of October and a total of 1661 by the end of November at weights down to 261 b.
