BODY OF HUNTER RECOVERED
Helicopter Used In Last Stages , (From Our Own Reporter) HOKITIKA. October 7.
The body of David Raymond Hubbard, the 30-year-old New Zealand Forest Service deer hunter, who died after a shooting accident in rugged country, 37 miles inland from Hokitika earlier this week, was flown out late on Thursday afternoon. Members of the Forest Service carried the body back to the Serpentine Hut, where it was picked up by a helicopter. A post mortem examination w» carried out ait Westland Hospital by Dr. J. Dunscombe, pathologist of the Greymouth Hospital. An inquest was later opened before the District Coroner (Mr R. Paterson) and adjourned after evidence of identification had been given. Senior Sergeant G. C. Donnelly said that inquiries showed that the accident happened about 2 pm. on Tuesday. Hubbard and his companion, Mr L Mathieson. were descending a rough track on their return to the Serpentine hut when Mr Mathieson, who was in the rear, fell, and his rifle discharged accidentally. Hubbard was shot through the calves of both legs, the bullets inflicting severe wounds. Mathieson rendered what assistance he could before setting off on his three hour and a half trek for assistance.
