No drownings had occurred during the season, and members had been responsible for five rescues, the secretary of the Sumner Surf LifeSaving Club (Mr B. J. Shackleton) reported to the club's annual meeting. With th£ greater membership, patrols had been spread overa larger number, but the problem Of unpunctuality and . members not turning up at all had to be faced. In future a member would be suspended from competition if he defaulted a patrol without a fair reason. Mr Shackleton said.

U-2s To Operate From Victoria (HZ. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA. October 7. Three American U-2 aircraft—the type shot down by the Russians just before the summit conference in April—will be baaed in Victoria from tile end of tltis month. The U-2s operating from Sale, near Melbourne, will be used for high altitude air sampling south of Australia, the Minuter of Defence (Mr Athol Townley) announced last night. They will be part of a fleet of more than 20 United States aircraft which will begin to arrive at Sale on October 16.
