NZ HORSES WIN
Successes At Harold Park Three New Zealand-bred horses were successful at last week’s meeting at Harold Park. Smooth Hanover, which started at 10 to 9 on, won the Qualifying Stakes decisively by a short length. Smooth Hanover, which was bred at Methven by Mr R Harris, is a four-year-old gelding by Smokey Hanover from Jillian, by Sir Michael. He is a halfbrother to Dark Louise, a favoured candidate for the Paparua Handicap at Motukarara today. Picasso, a five-year-old gelding by Medoro from Little Gipsy, caused an upset when he beat Junior Scott by a head in the J ana Hi Handicap. Picasso started at 20 to 1. Battle Fling qualified to start in the £5OOO Spring Cup on October 21 when he beat Redwin and the former New Zealand pacer, Nobby, in the Oyster Bay Handicap. Battle Fling, which started at 10 to 9, gave away starts of up to 24 yards and won by a head. The South Australian pacer, Heroic Action, a possible candidate for the Inter-Dominion Championship » series at Addington next February, won the Harold Park Free-for-all by half a length from Sibelia, with First Kiss a head away third. Apmat, the favourite ait 5 to 4, broke early and finished fourth. His trainer was warned to improve the horse’s barrier manners, otherwise his nomination would be refused ait Harold Park.
