Unusual Distinction For Naval Officer
An unusual academic distinction has been won by a naval electrical officer, Lieutenant J. A Bums, of H.M.N.Z.S. Irirangi. He has been awarded thq, degree of master of engineering, with distinction, by the University of Canterbury. During the last five years 33 master of engineering degrees have "been awarded in New Zealand. Only eight have been with distinction.
Educated ‘at St. Patrick’s College, Welington, Lieutenant Burns joined the Navy as a cadet (electrical) in 1949. After a year of preliminary naval training he attended the National School of Engineering at the university, where he was awarded the degree of bachelor of engineering. After a period of sea service and of study in the United Kingdom, Lieutenant Bums joined the staff of the Canterbury division of the RJJ.ZJM.VJR., at the same time continuing his studies at the University of Canterbury. This led to the award of his masterate.
