PRINTERS WORK TO RULES
Dublin Papers “Nightmare” (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 1 10 p.m.) LONDON, October 7. Some of the Dublin daily newspapers yesterday morning looked like a printer’s nightmare, says “The Times.” Capital letters and bold type cropped up in the most unlikely places in reports and even in the leading article. Some reports were printed in capital letters. The explanation lay in the fact that the printers are working to a rule because of a dispute with the publishers. The printers claimed an increase of 30s a week in the differential rate of £1 0s 6d between the salaries of day and night workers. The employers offered night workers an increase of 3s 6d and this offer was finally increased to 10s 6d after a labour court had recommended 7s. When the final offer was rejected, the printers decided not to work overtime and this week they decided to work to rule. This has meant that operators are setting copy according to their own sometimes unusual interpretation of the marks and corrections made by sub-editors.
