P.A.A. USE OF HAREWOOD
Director’s Reply To Mr Mathison
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 7. Remarks about Pan American Airways by the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr Mathison) were “a disappointment to a company which has served New Zealand since 1937,” said Mr Joseph H. Goding. in Auckland today. Mr Goding is Pan American’s director for New Zealand. Mr Mathison said in the House of Representatives yesterday that a representative in New Zealand for one international airline had repeatedly said his airline was ■willing to use Harewood. “According to his own company, this is incorrect,” said the Minister. “At best, foreign airlines are prepared to use Harewood only temporarily until Mangere is ready.” Mr Goding said the remarks appeared to refer to him and he said: "I have never made any public statement of the company’s desires on the New Zealand service that has not been cleared by the head office and I am not aware of anyone else doing this. “As the spokesman for Pan American in New Zealand, I have not made statements contrary to Pan American policy, which is that we would fly into Christchurch with jets if we were given trans-Tasman rights. “Christchurch understands that a Pan American jet service there would probably be temporary till Mangere is ready. "In the Pacific route study, the examiner’s recommendations do not indicate any change in the American carrier serving New Zealand,” said Mr Goding.
