TREE PLANTING IN PROVINCE
Approach To Forest Service The necessity for trees in Canterbury wfl« emphasised at a meeting at the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday by the chairman. Mr R. M. D. Johnson. He said the board must have closer association with the New Zealand Forest Service. He felt there were areas in the Selwyn Catchment which should be planted with trees for the benefit of many people. Mr R. D. Dick, chief conservation officer to the board, described with the aid at a map. various areas in the Upper Selwyn which could be planted with trees. The total area suitable was 35,000 acres but it was not proposed to plant them solidly because some good grazing areas would be left unplanted. Mr Johnson said it was proposed that the board's reprraentatives discuss with the Forest Service the establishment of protection and production forests within the areas described. The meeting adopted the proposal. Mr E. J. Stalker said he felt they had made some progress. The Forest Service was anxious to do extensive planting in Canterbury. There was an urgent need to slow down the run-off in th* Selwyn catchment.
