FOREST FIRE DANGER
Public Asked To Take Care
(New Zealand Press Association WELLINGTON, Oct. 6.
The Minister of Forests (Sir Eruera Tirikatane) today appealed for care to' prevent forest fires.
“October has come to be recognised as the beginning of New Zealand’s forest fire season, and it is now that the Forest Service intensifies its vigilance over these lands so essential to our country's national welfare,” he said. "I appeal to the nation to take care in the coming months. Each citizen must do his part to preserve the high productivity of our forests and grasslands. Not only must we do everything possible to prevent the outbreak of fires, we must also remember that it is everyone’s duty to report any suspected outbreak to the nearest rural fire office or forest service office.
“Farmers Wishing to make a clearing burn on their properties are bound to consult these authorities. By discussing weather conditions, and applying for a pennit to burn from the proper authorities, farmers will protect their own crops and stock and preserve the nation’s wealth. “To the sportsman, traveller and camper I say: Be reminded that New Zealand belongs to each of you. Let one part of it be burned and you are a much poorer man. If you sight a fire notify the local- police station or post office, who will put you in touch with the local fire control headquarters.”
