“Viewer Wooers” For B.B.C.
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.)
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, October 3.
In an effort to combat the “popularity appeal and approach” of announcers on commercial television, the 8.8. C. has decided to appoint four special announcers, two women and two men, to appear at frequent intervals throughout the programmes to provide a friendly and informal link with viewers. They Will talk about programmes in a casual way arid generally act as television “guides.”
Neither the women nor the men will wear evening dress. They have been chosen as much for their personalities as for their looks. Only one of the four will be seen on any one night, appearing for about a minute every hour. They will write their own miniature scripts and will give trailers for coming programmes. The popular papers have already christened them “viewers wooers.”
