RACING DRIVER KILLED

SYDNEY. October 2. The Victorian racing driver. Reg Smith, of Melbourne, was killed instantly today when the Porsche car he was driving in a race at Bathurst, central western New South Wales, plunged off the road at 135 miles an hour and struck a tree.
It is believed a gust of wind caught the car as it took the curve at the end of the straight The car went out of control, swerved across the track, hit a tree, bounced back to earth and hit the tree a second time.
The race was won by Australia’s world driving champion. Jack Brabham, who led all the way and set a new lap record.
