Criticism Of S.A Policy (N.Z. Press Association —Copynptit) JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 2. Tempers flared among a crowd of 20.000 that gathered outside the Johannesburg Town Hall yesterday to hear the Leader of the United (Opposition) Party (Sir de Villiers Graaf) call on South Africans to vote against their country becoming a republic in the referendum on Wednesday. “This, is the final blunder of an incompetent Government,’’ was the way in which Sir de Villiers Graaf describe* the referendum A possible ugly situation was averted by policemen who linked arms to keep the opposing factions apart. Sir de Villiers Graaf, making his last speech in the urban area before the referendum, said that voters had the right to look at the past record of the Nationalist Party.
“Did they not look for their republic at the hands of the victorious Adolf Hitler?” he asked. “U we want unity, we do not need ■ republic—we need a change of heart.”
