Hockey STANDARD OF N.Z. OLYMPIC TEAM

Good Prospects Seen For Future Of Sport (Neto Zealand Pres* Association) WELLINGTON, Oct 3. The experience the New Zealand hockey team had at the Olympic Games and on tour made it possibly the best team the country had ever had. the team manager iMr J. L Squireani said on his return to Wellington today. Through its performances at Rome. New Zealand had risen in stature throughout the hockey world. It was only a matter of time before India and Pakistan would be seriously threatened by the advance of countries which would possibly include New Zealand. Because it had played so often, and learned and gained experience from top teams, the New Zealand (ide had welded into a better combination as the tour progressed and had achieved better results than had been expected. While other countries had improved, the standard of India and Pakistan bad remained more or less static.

The pre-Games matches and games in the heat of Singapore had made the team “a lot more fit to take the field under the conditions at Rome,” said Mr Squirean.
