OUTSIDER, RED WIND, WINS METROPOLITAN

(IH.Z. Press Association-Copyright)

SYDNEY, October 3. A seventeen-year-old apprentice, Hilton Cope, gave bookmakers one of their biggest results ever in a major race when he stole the Metropolitan on the 16 to 1 chance Red Wind at Randwick today. Cope outsmarted senior jockeys when he slipped Red Wind away at the three furlongs and opened up an unbeatable lead. The New Zealand stayer, Waiparl, was an even money favourite, but could only finish second. He may now lose his place as Caulfield Cup favourite. He beat the former New Zealand horse, Sparkler (9 to 2) by a short half-head for second money. Waipari had been backed as a certainty and his price shortened from 6 to 4 to even money under the weight of huge bets on the course, w ■ - Sparkler, in spite of two recent failures, had also been strongly fancied by the powerful T. J. Smith stable. Ma Cherle, which brilliantly won the Epsom on Saturday, had been coupled heavily with Waiparl in doubles. Red Wind’s form gave punters little incentive to back him, as after winning an Encourage at Randwick on September 24. he was beaten in a Trial Stakes over 10 furlongs last Saturday. He opened at 14 to 1, drifted to 30’s and started at 16 to 1. Among bets laid on Red Wind on the course were £5OOO to £3OO and £2OOO to £l6O. Cope was riding to a plan: His instructions were to make the topweights Travel On and Sparkler carry their weight by sprinting away near the three furlongs. Cope, who has been riding since March, carried out the instructions perfectly and straightened up with a five-lengths lead. At that stage Red Wind was going strongly with his 7 stone but Hill and Sellwood were pushing Waipari and Sparkler *A > luriong from home Cope got his head down nad rode hard while most of the 50.000-strong crowd urged Waipari and Sparkler to catch him. It was obvious 100 yards from home that Red Wind had won. Although most of the crowd had lost their money they gave Cope a splendid reception as he came back to the mounting yard. Walpari’s rider. I. HUI, had no excuse for the defest. Sparider which until today had been running in short races, galloped himself back into the cup calculations when he came home well to run third. Sparkler had 8-6 today but goes up to 8-9 in the Caulfield Cup I and 6-7 in the Melbourne Cup.
