Hazardous Wait For Six Hours (flew Zealand Press Association; AUCKLAND. October 3. Mr Norman Jenner, aged 21, and Miss Barbara Hanley, aged 19, both of Onehunga, spent a hazardous six hours clinging to a sloping cliff face 100 ft above the rising tide at Waiwera yesterday. They were rescued about 9 p.m. after being hauled 75ft to the top by members of the Silverdale Volunteer Fire Brigade. They were among a party from the St Mary’s Catholic Youth Club which went to Waiweca for a day’s outing. “We went for a walk around the rocks, and I thought we could get beck over the top of the cliff," said Mr Jenner today. “About 3 pm..’when we were about 100 ft up the cliff, we found we could go no further. We stood on a narrow ledge and clung to the roots of a tree.” A search was organised when the two were missed about 5 p.m., and they were seen from a dinghy which was rowed around the cliff. The rescuers had to cut their way through the bush for nearly a mile to a point above the couple. Because of the overhanging cliff. Miss Hanley was dangling in space at one time when being hauled up. The rescuers had to carry Miss Hanley, who was unconscious, through the bush to a oar which was waiting to take her to the Auckland Hospital. She was treated for cuts and shock.
