U.S. MISSILE SUCCESS

Target, 5000 Miles Away, Hit IN.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CAPE CANAVERAL, October 1. A Titan intercontinental ballistic missile with a new guidance refinement hurled a dummy warhead 5000 statute miles to hit a target in the South Atlantic today. A heavily instrumented capsule which rode in the rocket’s nose was recovered by a range ship about an hour after the Titan blasted from its launching pad. The success was the sixteenth in 22 military tests of the 98ft Titan, scheduled to become America’s second war-ready 1.C.8.M. within one year. The two-stage rocket used a new guidance technique in which a ground station controlled a rolling, or turning, of the missile immediately after blast-off. The Titan is scheduled to begin a series of advanced tests in October at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. In the Vandenberg launchings, the rocket will be concealed in underground “silos,” and raised into firing por -ion by an elevator. Later models, called the Titan H. will include storable propellant that will' allow them to be ‘fired, directly from the silo. Present Titans use volatile liquid oxygen, which poses a delicate handling problem for Air Force troops.
