Nelson Railway
Sir. —“Facts” challenges my figures on rail and sea freight on timber. The figures quoted were verified both by a large sawmiller and the Railway Department. “Facts” omitted to state that his railway freight charges were for the notional railway, whereas mine are based on the longest railway route to the Blenheim railhead. For his edification I quote the comparative figure for transportation to Christchurch. By sea: Nelson wharfage, Is lOjd; sea freight, 18s sd; Lyttelton wharfage, 9d; H.LR. Lyttelton, 6d; handling charges, shipside. Is 8d; railage to Christchurch, 2s; total cost per 100 super, feet, 25s 21 d. By regular railway: Nelson - Christchurch railage, 16s; less concession for full load, Is; total cost per 100 super, feet, 15s. If the concession rate of 3s per 100 super, feet were allowed on the railway, the figures would be still more favourable.—Yours, etc.,
DIESEL, NELSON. September 30, 1960.
