Youth Delinquency
Sir, —Too many people nowadays seem to think their parental responsibilities end at the gate of the nearest kindergarten; a convenient, carefree state of mind the Welfare State does little to discourage. Schooldays indeed can sometimes repair the damages of a bad home, but not so easily when many a school is seriously under-staffed, and others little more than educational transit camps. Add to this the demoralising indulgence with whcih youthful misdemeanours are so often treated, and the lamentable lack of worthwhile interests on the part of so many youngsters, and the emergence of the arrogant, lawless adolescent ‘‘vandal” is scarcely surprising. —Yours, etc., BLINKERS OFF. September 30, 1960. [This correspondence is now closed.—Ed., “The Press.”!
