RACING Rayspar—Le Cheval In Westport Double

I From Our Own Reporter)

WESTPORT, October 2.

Confidently ridden by D. N. Hadfield, the Ric-carton-trained Ray spar took the lead at the half-mile and went away to a decisive win in the Licensed Victuallers’ Handicap, the first leg of the double and main event on the first day of the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday. Gavtana, which was handy all the way and followed hayspar into the straight, was second, two lengths and a half away, and Hunting Melody was well beaten into third three lengths further back.

The win was Rayspar's second tn open company and he ran the mile and a quarter out strongly. Previously his best form had been at distances up to a mile. Rayspar is a five-year-old gelding by Coral Arc from Opalescent, owned by Mr R. W. G. Parsons and trained by C. C. Stokes. He was the fourth favourite yesterday and paid £7 Ils for a win. With Le Cheval in the double. Rayspar pair £24 10s for £l. The weather was fair until the middle of the afternoon, when heavy rain fell. The track was soft. On-course the totalisator handled £12,833 10s, compared with £14.089 on the corresponding day last year. First Leg Skyrain was the early leader in the Licensed Victuallers’ Handicap, from London Tower, Hunting Melody, Disorder, Rayspar and Kalinita, with Gaytana also handy and Gay Tommy and King Lyn at the rear. Kalinita moved up to take the lead with six furlongs to go. Skyrain, Hunting Melody, and Rayspar were handy. Rayspar took over with half a mile to go, with Gaytana ranging up and Hunting Melody handy. Gay Tommy was starting to make up ground. They finished in that order. Kalinita, Disorder, London Tower. King Lyn and Sky rain were next. Le Cheval Wins Le Cheval completed a double for the day and gave W. D. Skelton his third winning ride of the day when r° m Ped home in the second leg of the double, the Roche Handicap Le Cheval ran clear after two furlongs and although Koralllon challenged at the two furlongs Le Cheval did not look like being overhauled. Skelton was just coastJ n < hxm alon « a t the finish, five lengths clear of Korallion, which was the same distance ahead of Arjamand. Heathcliff, Morelia. Volterra. Centesimo and Royal Bag were next. Morelia was slow away and never settled down. Royal Bag was prominent for four furlongs but tired badly. Le Cheval made it a “one-horse” race in the opening event, the Scanlon Hack Handicap. W. D. Skelton took the Roi Cheval gelding to the front after half a furlong, and he soon put a break on the others. Le Cheval won easing up by six lengths from Amulette which was second for most of the way. Heathcliff finished fast from the rear for third. There was a very close finish for the minor places, with not more than three-quarters of a length separating the four horses. Lady Reka was fourth and Harkville last. Sigurd by a Neck Sigurd, which was not well placed early in the Cliff Thomas Stakes No. 1, finished strongly over the last furlong to wear the pacemaker, Llantana, down in the last few strides. The local horse, Karli, was a fair third ahead of Appreciation, which finished fast from the rear for fourth. Sigurd was patiently ridden by B. W. McDonald, and his finishing run was impressive. Llantana set the pace from Pyramid Valley, Karli, Munster King, Sigurd, Appreciation and Atomic Power. Llantana still had charge half way down the straight, but Sigurd out-finished her by a neck. Karli lasted for third a length and a half back. After Appreciation came Mazarine, Atomic Power, Pyramid Valley, Zayton, Munster King and Carminic. Easy for Slatey Slatey won the Colvin Hack Handicap in good style for his Dobson owner-trainer, S. W. Gillman. Alonzing made most of the pace from Slatey, Pacisana, Last Link, Zayton and Pyrites. That order was maintained until

the six furlongs, where W. D. Skelton took Slatey through to lead, and he was not afterwards tested. Pacisana came with a late run to beat Alonzing for second but he was two and a half lengths from Slatey. Last Link was a poor fourth ahead of Zayton and Pyrites, which were beaten off. All-the-way Win . Ruffle gained an all-the-way win in the Cliff Thomas Stakes No. 2. She was followed to the straight by Rajah, First Blue, Lecord, Sleat and Royal Money. G. W. Mein gave Ruffle a breather on the home turn, but she dashed away again in the straight to win by two and a half lengths from Rajah, which beat Lecord for second by a head. Sleat was fourth, then came First Blue, Royal Money, and Lady Juriste. Results : SCANLON HANDICAP, Of £150: seven furlongs. VI LE CHEVAL (5) 8-10 W. D. Skelton 1 3/3 AMULETTE (8) 8-0 D. N.
