The club had held its first meeting on October 16. 1890, said the president (Mr A. J. Nicol!) before asking Mrs Nicol! to make a presentation to Mr J. Smyth, owner of the Ashburton Flying Stakes winner. False Step, at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s spring meeting on Saturday.

The club had come a long way in its 70 years and it had played an important part in fostering classic racing as well as providing racing for the best horses, such as those seen in action in the Flying Stakes.

The third horse in Saturday’s race received £llO as its share of the stake. That amount was greater than the total stakes offered at the club’s first meeting 70 years ago, said Mr Nicoll.
