SAND CARTAGE REFUSED

Transport Licensing Application The No. 9 District Transport Licencing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood) has refused an application by Webbs Transport. Ltd., of No. 1 R.D., Ashburton, for permission to carry sand from Mt Somers to the Crown Crystal Glass Proprietor, Ltd., factory at Hornby. Webbs Transport, Ltd., (Mr C. B. Atkinson) sought an amendment to a goods service licence by the addition of one vehicle authority for a truck and one for a trailer, with exemption from the rail restriction. The application was opposed by the New Zealand Railways (Mr L. C. Brown). In a reserved decision Mr Haywood said he accepted the evidence thart the Crown Crystal Glass Company was now “prosperous" after having operated at a profit for three years. “The issues lie between the New Zealand Railways, to which I have a statutory duty, and the Crown Crystal Glass Proprietary Ltd., carrying on business of great importance to the national economy,” said Mr Haywood. He said the applicant companj had not discharged the onus foe further relief from the “Railway: Restriction Legislation." He added that after a fair tria' of road and rail combined, th< matter could be the subject of ; fresh application.
