Softball KNOCK-OUT EVENT
Whitesox Wins Senior Men’s
The Canterbury softball season opened with an all-day knock-out competition at Hagley Park on Saturday when Richmond Whitesox won the senior men’s event, beating Papanui 4-1 in the final. The pitching of K. Smith, and generally tighter work in the field was the main reason for Whitesox’s win. The matches were limited to 40min, with the score for equal completed innings counting. The friendly knock-out competition provided excellent match practice for the opening of the league season next week-end. Papanui took first strike against Whitesox, in the men’s final, but Was soon dismissed. In reply R. Hall made a two-base hit which bought in Smith and R. Tubman. Neither side scored in the second, but in the third innings R. Hall hit Tubman in and R. Parks brought in A. Hall. So Whitesox took a 4-0 lead, although it might have been more had not the Papanui catcher, B. Shaw, smartly tagged out two Whitesox men when bases were loaded. In the fourth innings a three-base hit by P. Waine brought in McBratney for Papanui* s sole run, and Whitesox, facing a substitute pitcher in M. Bell, failed to score. Senior and Shaw completed the circuit for Papanui in the fifth, but the bell went for the end of the game before Whitesox could bat and so only the first four innings counted.
