HIGH STANDARD SET AT GYMNASTIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

A far higher standard of work, compared with the previous year, was set at the Canterbury Gym-

nastic Association’s second championship meeting, held in Christchurch on Saturday. Entries were greater and there was better competition throughout. There were about 66 entries in the women’s section. 26 in the A grade and 40 in the B grade, and about 60 entries in the men's section, 20 in the A grade and 40 in the B grade. Eleven clubs were represented, with competitors coming from as far away as Auckland and Dunedin. Winner of the men’s A grade championship. M. R. England (St. Andrew’s College) showed excellent form on the parallel bar. finishing his work off very smoothly. England scored 85} points out of a possible of 120. Second place in the championship was filled by another member of the St Andrew’s Club. J. S. T. Ellis, who scored 77} points. In the B grade of the men's section, P. A. Frenvley (St. Andrew’s) won the individual championship with 78} points. He was ctoeely followed by R. B. Jones (Papanui High) with 76 points.

The standard in the women’s A grade was particularly high, especially in the floor exercises and the vaulting. The ability to combine free rhythmic movement with agility and control, as shown in the acrobatic stands, was an outstanding feature. Anne Horn (Papanui High) gave a faultless exhibition in this section.

The voluntary vaulting was outstanding at times and the performances of the winners of both the cross and long box sections showed precision and form. Some competitors in this section were a little ambitious and although the degree of difficulty gained high marks, the execution lacked finish and control. With a total of 69} points.

Maureen Fanner (West High) retained her Canterbury title m the individual championship. She gave an outstanding performance in the balance exercise® and the beam exercises. Her control in the upward and reverse circling movements on the Swedish beam were precise and beautifully executed. Results:— WOMEN Individual Championship—M Farmer (West High*. Points, 1; V.
